Shaker Heights' boys and girls fencing teams won state championships in Columbus during the weekend. It was the first titles for both programs. The boys overcame a 122-95 deficit after the first day of competition in the sabre and foil at Dublin Coffman High School, winning the foil but dropping the sabre. In their strongest event, the epee, the Raiders topped Upper Arlington, 94-42, to win the championship at 199-164.
Shaker's girls team defeated Dublin Coffman in the sabre but dropped the foil and trailed by seven points heading into the epee, where the Raiders claimed the fifth-, sixth- and seventh-place spots to tie Dublin Coffman with 138 points for the championship. West Geauga was the next-highest finisher.
Individually, Shaker Heights' Stephen Cabrera placed second in the foil, and David Coscarelli tied for third in both the foil and the epee. St. Edward's Liam Butterfield placed second in the epee.
Fairview's Mary J. Pozydaev placed first in the epee. Shaker Heights' Carolyn Stange and Akosua Kernizan tied for third in the sabre.
